Redwork... is from the days when one could purchase "muslin penny" squares at a local dry good store. The squares were stamped with designs for ones stitching pleasure. Little girls would practice their stitches on these squares. Monochromatic being the color scheme, colors of red, blue or black thread were used.
The red thread was usually dyed with Turkey Red dye and only stitched with the one color. Washing and drying the stitched fabrics in the sun would not fade the colorfast red thread.

Dating ourselfves a bit but I remember well doing teatowels with redwork patterns!!! I have been really into the 'redwork' with my stamping lately too - I see I am not the only one!!! Very cute!!
